Intro
Psalm 48 is a hymn of praise that extols the greatness and beauty of the city of God. As we study this psalm from a New Covenant perspective, we will see how it points to Jesus Christ as the ultimate fulfillment of the city of God. We will explore the themes of God's presence and protection, the joy and security found in His city, and the everlasting glory of His reign.
Section 1: God's Presence and Protection (vs 1-3)
"Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of His holiness. Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth, is Mount Zion on the sides of the north, the city of the great King. God is in her palaces; He is known as her refuge."
Talking Points:
The greatness and praise-worthiness of the Lord in the city of God.
The beauty and joy that the city brings to the whole earth.
The assurance of God's presence and protection within the city.
Harmony: Matthew 28:20 (NIV), "And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
Questions:
How does the psalmist's description of the city of God inspire you to appreciate the presence and protection of God in your life?

Section 2: The Joy and Security of God's City (vs 4-8)
"For behold, the kings assembled, they passed by together. They saw it, and so they marveled; they were troubled, they hastened away. Fear took hold of them there, and pain, as of a woman in birth pangs, as when You break the ships of Tarshish with an east wind. As we have heard, so we have seen in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God: God will establish it forever."
Talking Points:
The reaction of the kings who witness the greatness of God's city and are filled with fear and awe.
The depiction of God's power and authority over all earthly forces.
The affirmation that God will establish His city forever.
Harmony: Revelation 21:2-3 (NIV), "I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, 'Look! God's dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.'"

Section 3: The Everlasting Glory of God's Reign (vs 9-14)
"We have thought, O God, on Your lovingkindness, in the midst of Your temple. According to Your name, O God, so is Your praise to the ends of the earth; Your right hand is full of righteousness. Let Mount Zion rejoice, let the daughters of Judah be glad, because of Your judgments. Walk about Zion, and go all around her. Count her towers; mark well her bulwarks; consider her palaces; that you may tell it to the generation following. For this is God, our God forever and ever; He will be our guide even to death."

How does Jesus, as our eternal guide, lead us in the paths of righteousness and promise us a glorious reign with Him forever?
