Psalm 16
Finding Security and Joy in God's Presence
_______________________________________
Intro
This Bible study explores the themes of taking refuge in God, His provision and guidance, and the hope and joy found in His presence. It invites us to reflect on our relationship with God and find security, contentment, and joy in His unfailing presence. The New Covenant perspective brings the fulfillment of these promises through Jesus Christ and encourages us to seek and cultivate a deeper relationship with Him.
Section 1: Taking Refuge in God (vs 1-4)
"Preserve me, O God, for in You I take refuge. I said to the LORD, 'You are my Lord; apart from You I have no good thing.' As for the saints who are in the land, they are the glorious ones in whom is all my delight. The sorrows of those who run after another god will multiply; I will not pour out their libations of blood, or take their names upon my lips."
Talking Points:
- David's plea for God's preservation and his declaration of taking refuge in Him.
- Acknowledging God's lordship and recognizing that apart from Him, there is no true goodness.
- The contrast between the fate of those who follow false gods and the delight found in the community of saints.
Harmony: Acts 4:12 "Salvation exists in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."
Questions:
- How does taking refuge in God bring security and peace to your life?
- What does it mean for you to declare that God is your Lord and that apart from Him, there is no good thing?
- How can we navigate the contrast between the sorrows of pursuing false gods and the delight found in the community of saints in our modern context?
Section 2: God's Provision and Guidance (vs 5-8)
"The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; You have made my lot secure. The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. I will bless the LORD who counsels me; even at night my conscience instructs me. I have set the LORD always before me; because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken."
Talking Points:
Acknowledging God as the source of security, provision, and inheritance.
Gratitude for God's guidance and counsel, even in the stillness of the night.
The resolve to keep the LORD ever-present and trusting in His constant presence and support.
Harmony: Isaiah 41:10 "Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will surely help you; I will uphold you with My right hand of righteousness."
Questions:
How does recognizing God as your chosen portion and cup impact your perspective on life and contentment?
How can we cultivate an awareness of God's guidance and instruction in our daily lives?
What does it mean for you to set the LORD always before you and trust in His constant presence and support?
Section 3: Hope and Joy in God's Presence (vs 9-11)
"Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will dwell securely. For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol, nor will You let Your Holy One see decay. You have made known to me the path of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence, with eternal pleasures at Your right hand."
Talking Points:
The resulting gladness, rejoicing, and security that come from being in God's presence.
The assurance of God's faithfulness to preserve and protect from the realm of the dead.
The promise of knowing the path of life and experiencing eternal joy in God's presence.
Harmony: Acts 2:25-28 "David says about Him: 'I saw the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad, and my tongue rejoices; my body also will live in hope, because You will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, You will not let Your Holy One see decay. You have made known to me the paths of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence.'"
Questions:
How does the prospect of dwelling securely and experiencing gladness and joy in God's presence resonate with you?
How does the promise of eternal life and joy impact your perspective on life and its challenges?
How can we cultivate a deeper awareness of God's presence and the joy that comes from being in His presence?
Summary
Psalm 16 provides an incredible foreshadowing of the resurrection of Jesus and the hope and security found in Him.
David's plea for preservation (Psalm 16:1) and his trust in God as his refuge (Psalm 16:2) are embodied in Jesus, who submitted to the Father's will, even to death, and found ultimate deliverance in His resurrection (Matthew 26:39, 1 Corinthians 15:20).
The psalmist's joy in the fellowship of the saints (Psalm 16:3) parallels the community of believers formed around Jesus and the unity He prayed for His followers (John 17:21).
The contrast made between the sorrows of those who run after other gods and the chosen portion of those who trust in God (Psalm 16:4-6) aligns with Jesus' teachings about the futility of worldly pursuits versus the lasting treasure in heaven (Matthew 6:19-21).
The psalmist's hope in the face of death (Psalm 16:9-10) was dramatically fulfilled in Jesus' resurrection, as Peter explains in Acts 2:25-28.
David's assurance of experiencing eternal joys in God's presence (Psalm 16:11) also prefigures the eternal life Jesus offers to all who believe in Him (John 3:16, John 14:2-3).
Psalm 16 can be seen as a prophetic anticipation of the hope, joy, and eternal security fully realized in Jesus Christ under the New Covenant.
