Title: "Grace and Truth: Revealing God's Heart"
Devotional Study for John 1:17-18
Verses: John 1:17-18 (NIV) "For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known."
In these verses, the apostle John contrasts the Law given through Moses with the grace and truth that came through Jesus Christ. This contrast highlights the transformative nature of Christ's ministry and His unique role as the revealer of God's heart.
"For the law was given through Moses..." The Law, represented by the commandments and regulations given to Israel, was a vital part of God's revelation. It provided moral guidance, principles for righteous living, and a standard by which humanity could recognize sin. However, the Law, though holy and just, could not provide the complete solution to humanity's spiritual needs. It pointed to a need for something more—a Savior.
"Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." These words encapsulate the essence of the Gospel. In Jesus Christ, we find the perfect embodiment of God's grace and truth. Grace, which offers forgiveness and salvation to undeserving sinners, came through His sacrificial death on the cross. Truth, which reveals the reality of God's love and the way to eternal life, is found in His teachings and life example.
"No one has ever seen God..." The invisible and infinite God is beyond human comprehension or visualization. However, through Jesus Christ, God chose to make Himself known. Jesus, the one and only Son, is Himself God. In His life, we see the character of God on full display—His love, His compassion, His holiness, and His desire for reconciliation with humanity.
"Has made him known." Jesus, by His life, ministry, and ultimately by His atoning sacrifice on the cross, revealed God to humanity in a profound way. He made the invisible God visible. He demonstrated God's love and offered a path to redemption. In Christ, we find not only a Savior but also a revealer of God's heart.
As we meditate on these verses, let us be grateful for the grace and truth that came through Jesus Christ. He is the fulfillment of the Law, the embodiment of God's love, and the way to eternal life. Through Christ, we can know God and experience His transformative grace.
May we, like Thomas Jenkins, be messengers of this grace and truth to a world in need of the revelation of God's heart. As we follow Jesus, let us reflect His grace and truth in all we do.
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the grace and truth that came through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us to walk in His footsteps, revealing Your heart to those around us. May we be vessels of Your transformative grace and messengers of Your truth. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
